Eventually, superior weapons and numbers gave the advantage to the English, coupled with Native American deaths due to European diseases. Settlers moved outside the protections of forts and became farmer/planters.

Here is a typical planter's home.

 

Although the interior of this cabin seems as plain as the outside, there are in fact a number of indications of wealth: a brick fireplace, fine china, well-crafted furniture and a wood floor.
