Introduction

Here is a map of the "most inhabited part" of the Colony of Virginia drawn by Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson, father of Thomas Jefferson. What do you notice about the size of Virginia compared to today? Who do you think the toys and books on the mantelpiece belonged to?

Learning from history means making history into a living memory. Dead people did not create our society or form of government. Living people did.

Today the reconstruction of life in Williamsburg, Jamestown, Carter's Grove, and similar sites of living history allows us to taste, and touch, and smell our heritage. This window into the past can help us understand our present and envision our future.
